Bladeless LASIK
Bladeless LASIK allows ophthalmologists increased precision and patient customization in the critical first step of LASIK surgery: creating the flap on the eye’s surface that allows access to the cornea.
The Indianapolis LASIK team at 20/20 Institute is proud to offer patients Bladeless LASIK using the technologically advanced Ziemer Femto LDV laser.
Bladeless vs. Traditional LASIK
In traditional LASIK procedures, a small, hand-held bladed surgical device called a microkeratome was used to cut a thin flap on the surface of your eye. That flap was used to access and reshape your cornea with a LASIK (excimer) laser.
With Bladeless LASIK, the Femtosecond LDV Laser is used to create the flap with increased safety and accuracy. Bladeless LASIK can also be used to treat some patients who aren’t candidates for traditional Bladed LASIK, including those with corneas that are considered too thin.
Benefits of Bladeless LASIK
The primary benefits of Bladeless LASIK are increased safety and accuracy. Because factors such as the required flap thickness and diameter of the flap are programmed into the corresponding software for Bladeless LASIK, the results are more precise and predictable than with a surgical Microkeratome.
Bladeless LASIK also allows vision correction treatment for a wider array of patients. Prior to Bladeless LASIK, many patients with high prescription levels or thin corneas were not eligible for refractive vision correction surgery.
