Facts About Eyes

We use our eyes for nearly everything we do, but we sometimes take them for granted. To show you just how important your eyes are and how hard they work, here are some fun facts about your eyes.

The most active muscles in your body are the ones that move your eyes.

Your eyes are always moving to take in everything around you, so your eye muscles are always working hard to help you see.

Half of your brain’s capacity is used for visual perception.

Your eyes and brain are constantly working together to help you perceive your surroundings.

The epithelium (surface tissue of your cornea) is one of the quickest healing tissues in your body.

The entire surface of your cornea can turn over in 7 days. This is why LASIK is such a safe and virtually painless procedure because the flap is created in the epithelium

Your eyes can get sunburned.

Believe it or not, your eyes can get sunburned, which is called photokeratitis. Make sure to always wear sunglasses when you’re out in the sun, and never look directly at the sun.

On average, you blink 15-20 times per minute.

The rate you blink can decrease by about half when you’re doing visually demanding tasks, like reading books or working on a computer. This can lead to dry eyes, so make sure you take time to blink and rest your eyes.
